Why do patients travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina for dental treatment?

Patients travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina for dental treatment mainly because of price, and to TB Dent also because of the location. Treatment costs less than in Western Europe, North America or Australia, while the implant systems are the ones used worldwide: Straumann from Switzerland and Neodent, part of the Straumann Group since 2015.

Prices are set in convertible marks (KM), which have a fixed exchange rate to the euro (€1 = 1.95583 KM), so the euro price you are quoted stays the same. About 30% of our full-arch patients come from overseas and half from neighbouring Croatia.

Bosnia and Herzegovina is not in the EU. That matters for your travel documents and your phone, both covered below.

Why Trebinje?

Trebinje is a town in the south of Herzegovina, close to the borders with Croatia and Montenegro. The clinic is about 30 km, or 40 minutes by car, from Dubrovnik, about 1.5 hours from Tivat Airport in Montenegro and 45 minutes from Herceg Novi. You fly into a holiday airport with seasonal direct flights from much of Europe, and free days between appointments can be spent on the Dubrovnik coast.

Single implant price covers the implant, anaesthesia, uncovering, abutment and crown. CBCT scan not included. €1 = 1.95583 KM.

Full-arch prices include the implants, abutments, the temporary fixed bridge, the final bridge, anaesthesia and check-ups. Not included are the CBCT scan, taken at a partner X-ray centre next to the clinic, and the removal of any remaining teeth. A zirconia bridge costs €1,534 (3,000 KM) extra per jaw, and treating both jaws at once brings a 10% discount.

Not sure whether you need four or six implants? Read All-on-4 or All-on-6.

How do I pay?

We don't ask for a deposit. For implant treatment you pay for the surgical part on the day of surgery and the rest when the final teeth are fitted. If for any reason you don't come back for the final work, you have paid only for what was done, and you keep your implant passport. You can pay in cash or by card, and the clinic accepts different currencies.

For your insurer, we issue a medical report listing every procedure and price, together with a fiscal receipt. Whether your insurance pays anything back is worth checking with them before you travel.

What does the trip itself cost?

The transfer from Dubrovnik or Tivat Airport is free in both directions. We arrange accommodation in partner apartments at €50 a night, or Hotel Nar from €75, and it should be booked at least two months ahead because summer fills up.

Flights are the part that changes most. Compare the total of treatment, flights and nights with the quote you have at home, not the treatment price alone. For All-on-4 or All-on-6, that total includes two return trips.

‍

How many trips to Trebinje do I need?

The number of trips to Trebinje depends on the treatment: two for All-on-4 or All-on-6, three for a single implant and one stay for a Hollywood Smile.

How many trips each treatment takes
Treatment Trips Time in Trebinje Between trips
All-on-4 or All-on-622 days, then 5 working days3–4 months of healing
Single implant3implant; uncovering; scan and crown in one stay of a few days3–4 months, then about 20 days
Hollywood Smile15–7 days, 3 appointmentsnone

A Hollywood Smile fits into one stay when all teeth are treated beforehand and the appointment is booked in advance.

Implants need three to four months to fuse with the bone, and this cannot be sped up. That healing time is why implant treatment always means coming back.

What happens on the first trip for All-on-4?

The first trip takes two days. On day one, any remaining teeth are removed, the implants are placed and a scan is taken, all in one appointment under local anaesthetic. You spend one night without teeth while the dental technician makes the temporary bridge from the scan, and the next day you leave with fixed temporary teeth.

Surgery is usually on a Saturday morning. Flying or a long drive is fine two days after surgery.

Can I come only once a year?

Yes. The temporary bridge lasts up to 12 months, so you can get it on your summer visit and the final bridge the following year. When we explain both options, most patients find it simpler to come back after four to six months. We discuss this before treatment starts, not after.

‍

Who will treat me at TB Dent?

TB Dent is a private dental clinic in Trebinje, founded by Dr Nikola Krnojelac and Dr Marija Krnojelac. Implant surgery is performed by Dr Darijo Pandžić, a specialist in oral surgery with ten years of specialist experience, who places around 300 implants a year across the clinics where he works. He trained in the immediate-loading protocol in Lisbon and through Neodent's NeoArch programme.

Dr Nikola Krnojelac, co-founder and oral surgery resident, leads the prosthetic part and also places implants. At TB Dent we do around 100 full-arch treatments a year, about 60 All-on-4 and 40 All-on-6. Crowns, bridges and veneers are made by our partner laboratory in Mostar.

All doctors and the reception speak English. Dr Pandžić comes to the clinic twice a month, so surgery dates are booked in advance.

How do I get to Trebinje?

Most international patients fly into Dubrovnik in Croatia and are driven to Trebinje in about 40 minutes, through the Ivanica border crossing.

Border waiting times vary, and are longest in July and August.

What documents do I need?

Bosnia and Herzegovina is not part of the EU or the Schengen area, so you cross an external border and need your passport. Citizens of the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and EU countries can visit without a visa for up to 90 days within 180 days. Check the rules for your own passport before you travel.

UK government travel advice says your passport must be valid for at least 90 days after the day you leave, and that every foreign visitor must be registered with the police within 72 hours of arrival. Hotels usually do this for their guests. As a non-EU traveller you also pass EU border checks at Dubrovnik, so allow extra time in summer.

Will my phone work?

EU roaming does not cover Bosnia and Herzegovina. Check your provider's tariff before you travel, or use Wi-Fi and WhatsApp to stay in touch with the clinic.

‍

What happens after I fly home?

After treatment at TB Dent you get a written warranty of 10 years on implants and 5 years on the prosthetic work, valid with regular check-ups. It is signed by the doctor and by you, and covers breakage of the bridge or crown and of the screws. It does not cover damage from accidents or injury, missed check-ups, very poor oral hygiene, or a decline in general health that leads to implant loss.

On the day of surgery you receive an implant passport with the manufacturer, type and position of every implant. With it, any dentist in the world can make or repair the work on your implants. Check-ups are one month after the final work is fitted, then every six months.

If something needs fixing, you come to Trebinje and we see you straight away, without waiting for an appointment. The travel cost is yours. That is the honest trade-off of treatment abroad: you pay less for the treatment, but a repair means another trip.

How do I choose a dental clinic abroad safely?

The UK General Dental Council advises patients to ask about the dentist's qualifications and experience, guarantees, aftercare, who pays for remedial work and how complaints are handled. It also advises that a dentist should assess you before you get a treatment plan or a price.

In practice, ask any clinic, including us, for:

  • the name and qualifications of the surgeon
  • the implant brand, and an implant passport after surgery
  • a written treatment plan and price based on a CBCT scan, before you buy flights
  • a written warranty with its conditions
  • a clear answer on what happens if something goes wrong after you get home

‍

How do I get a treatment plan before I travel?

To get a treatment plan and an exact price from TB Dent, send your CBCT scan on WhatsApp or Viber. For veneers, a few photos of your teeth and a panoramic X-ray (OPG) are enough. The consultation is free and is led, in English, by the doctor who will do the treatment, and you get the plan and price before you buy flights.

Book at least 30 days ahead, earlier for July and August, and accommodation two months ahead. We arrange the appointment and the transfer together, so a driver is waiting for you at the airport.
